We’re really sorry, but the Grimshaw exhibition in the Art Gallery and the West Wing of the Rotunda Museum are currently closed due to water leaks following recent heavy rainfall. We’re working to open them again as soon as possible – thanks for your understanding.

Open call for objects - Always Been Here

31 July 202310am - 2pmFREE

Scarborough Art Gallery

We’re inviting members of the queer community to loan personal objects to be part of Always Been Here, the autumn exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery, in partnership with Crescent Arts. This session is drop-in with no need to book and you’ll receive a warm welcome in a safe environment.

At Scarborough Museums and Galleries (SMG) we are on a journey to learn from and with people within the queer community, to find ways to work together to ensure stories, experiences, knowledge and histories from this community are represented in our work and venues.

The open call for objects for Always Been Here, is part of many important steps in this work.

Your object needs to:

  • Have a connection to you and reflect your lived experience of queerness.
  • Be … anything! A cinema ticket, a pair of shoes, a rubber duck …
  • Be just one object.
  • Be no bigger than an electric kettle.
  • Be something where you feel comfortable to tell us about why it is important to you

Opening on Saturday 16 September at Scarborough Art Gallery, the exhibition Always Been Here will investigate fragmented queer histories, drawing from the Scarborough Museums collection and raising important questions about identity, community and ownership.

At SMG, as a whole team, we are doing work to find points of relevance in the organisations offer, to connect and better understand the queer community.

As Always Been Here is a community driven exhibition and we’d like to explore how exhibiting these personal objects might allow for opportunities for people to share their own queer histories and help us to develop our collective knowledge of this topic.

You’ll meet a member of the SMG team and will be invited to Space To Be. We’ll then ask you to complete this short form with some basic information about you and the object you have brought with you. We’ll then discuss how we might display and add a label to the object in the exhibition along with how we’ll keep it safe during the exhibition.

After the seclection process, you will be informed if your object has not been selected and invited to collect your object from the Art Gallery on the 7th or 8th August, 10am – 5pm.

If you would like to print off, complete and bring the object submission form with you, you can download it here: https://scarboroughmuseumsandgalleries.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/ABH-Object-submission-form.pdf
