We’re really sorry, but the Grimshaw exhibition in the Art Gallery and the West Wing of the Rotunda Museum are currently closed due to water leaks following recent heavy rainfall. We’re working to open them again as soon as possible – thanks for your understanding.

Always Been Here

16 September 2023—7 January 2024Free with an Annual Pass (£3 / Free under 18s and registered carers)

Scarborough Art Gallery

Always Been Here pieces together the voices and artefacts of Scarborough’s queer heritage at Scarborough Art Gallery this Autumn. Through a process of collaborative engagement with local queer people, the exhibition brings together unique perspectives on works from the Scarborough Museums and Galleries permanent collection, presenting them alongside objects of personal significance to the local queer community for the first time.

In doing so, the exhibition continues to ask important questions about how our collection ties us to Scarborough and what hidden histories can be collectively discovered.

Forming part of the exhibition is the Queer Infoshop, a contemporary network of LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals, who have been working together with Crescent Arts to curate a new section of community-made and heritage-informed artworks. By connecting the work of the Queer Infoshop with the collaborative curation of the collection, Always Been Here seeks to generate a redefining sense of queer ownership and joy within public spaces and our collections.

This project is a partnership between Scarborough Museums and Galleries and Crescent Arts.
